History:
Bucky was an Orphan on the streets of Brooklyn, living life kind of rough, until one day he helps a kid by the name of Steve Rogers fend off a group of neighborhood bullies. The pair become fast friends, and Steve convinces Bucky to leave the streets and come stay in the Orphanage with him. ( First Vengeance issue 1-4)
It was the 30’s and times where tough for everyone, though life in the orphanage was far better then life in the streets, it didn’t mean it was always an easy life. When you best friend and the only person you consider family is always sick and there is hardly enough money to keep food on the table and cloths on the children’s back you start to have real life worries at an early age.
[ Childhood head cannon here shared with Steve player applying ]
Bucky was a healthy bright boy, even though he had somewhat of a mouth on him and a quick wit, he was still a highly adoptable child, though he’d often make sure no family would take him in. To stay with and take care of Steve, his best friend and the only family Bucky really sees himself as having.
At times when Steve would get sick, Bucky would sneak out and steal medicine to try and help his friend get better. In later years he realized how stupid this was because he didn’t really know what he was doing and very well could have made the situation worse. But at the time he was just trying to take care of someone who also took care of him.
[ End of childhood headcannon. ]
Though Bucky dropped out of High School he takes art classes here and there with Steve but has none of the talent Steve does and mostly just goes to see the naked girls. Which Steve chides him for from time to time, but Bucky just lets it roll off his shoulders.
It is during one of these classes in 1941 when they hear that Pearl Harbor has been bombed and the nation has gone to war.
Bucky decides to enlist in the army and so does Steve, Bucky tries to talk Steve out of it because of his health and size, and the fact that he doesn’t want his best friend going off to war.
When Steve says he’ll find a way to do it on his own without Bucky, Bucky has a change of heart and decides to help train Steve up.
Bucky gets accepted into the Army and Steve gets rejected; Bucky is relieved. More than relieved he doesn’t want his family going off to get shot at he lost his father to WWI and doesn’t want to lose Steve as well.
The night before he ships out he goes to the Stark Expo with Steve where they get into (add word get into what?) about Steve ditching their dates to go try and enlist again. He tries to talk Steve out of it and brings his size into it.
He cares too much to let his friend go off and fight a war, when Bucky is sure Steve wouldn’t come back, no matter how much fight his best friend has in him.
They aren’t mad at each other for long though, just a matter of minutes because Bucky has to ship out. They go their separate ways. [ First Vengeance 1-4 ]
During a gruesome mission Bucky is take as a POW and tortured and experimented on, it is a dark time, but he stays strong and doesn’t give the Hydra operatives any information. He starts to lose track of time and isn’t sure how long they have been holding him in the lab. Bucky starts to question his sanity when a taller, broader stronger Steve shows up for his rescue, in tights no less. But after an exchange of a few words he is sure it’s his friend, but between this and the torture well he’ll just have a lot of processing to do when they get back to base right now they just need to get out of the Hydra base.
They finally manage to escape, and while he is in shock, over what he’s seen and been through and over Steve’s new size. Bucky can’t help but to be happy that Steve’s outsides finally match what he knew was inside.
[ The following is from Captain America Vs Winter Solider Trade the lead in to the stand alone Winter Soldier comics]
But even though Steve has a new body, new strength and isn’t the sick little kid anymore he can’t help but feel protective over his friend, and think he needs someone around who still sees him as the scraper from Brooklyn and he will happily remind Steve that he is a brat at times.
On a mission to collect on of Red Skull’s man and put a stop to Hydra, Bucky falls from the train, and is presumed dead by the US Army and Steve. Only the fall doesn’t kill him it bangs up his body something awful.
But his fall into the freezing snow preserved his body and kept him from bleeding out from the loss of his left arm and the serious wounds covering the left side of his body. The Russians find him and the doctors begin to run tests on him and rebuild him. The doctors on the transport treated as best they could to keep him alive put him cryostatis until his arrival in Moscow.
Once in Moscow they start testing the serum they smuggled out of the Hydra labs during a spy mission on his blood while keeping him in status. They are aware that this is Bucky Barnes, Captain America’s partner and best friend, they believe he has the secrets to the serum and will make a good test subject.
When they bring him out of cryostatis they fear him dead and give him a shot of adrenaline straight to the heart along with electroshocks.
When Bucky awakes because of the trauma of the snow and cryostatis he has no memory of his former life. Understandably so Bucky freaks out when he wakes up on a lab table. The Russians realized he has retained his muscle memory. Even with one arm the Russians are surprised as his spryness. They sedate him and put him back in cryostatis, and determine there is nothing super about him.
He remains in the cryo tube from 1945-1954, when the robotics division attached his arm, and the Russians began building a new memory for project code name Winter Soldier.
He spends the next three years doing spy and assassination missions for the Russians, in between missions he is returned to statis. But slowly despite the brainwashing his mind starts trying to fill the holes that when in his memory when he is pulled from the snow.
In a mission in Chicago the lines start to blur more in his mind, memories start to bleed through, and he becomes confused he is no longer sure what he is or who he is. After he kills a senator he fails to meet with his handlers instead he follows his urge to board a bus to New York City.
For two weeks he was away from the Russians and living in an old flop house in The Lower East Side, it took to Russian agents to take him back into the custody. When he is returned he says he doesn’t know why he felt the need to go to New York nor does he remember anything from his life outside of being The Winter Soldier.
In 1983 he goes to the Middle East to be the bodyguard to the head of his project, and still doesn’t have any memory of his life before being brainwashed into serving Russia. When the elderly Krachove dies as per his wishes Winter Soldier is put back into statis and put into storage in the department of abandoned experiments.
He remains in statis from 1988 to about 2007 when General Lukin ( who has dealings with Red Skull) wakes him and uses him to start the search for the cosmic cube.
During the hunt for the cosmic cube Bucky and Steve start running into each other and fighting each other. Both unaware of who the other is, Bucky because he has no memories and Steve because he assumes like everyone else from that time Bucky is dead.
Someone drops the Winter Soldier files off at Steve’s apartment and he realizes who the Winter Soldier is and it changes his feelings on the battle. But he will still try to stop The Winter Soldier from getting the cube.
During the final fight for the cube Steve uses it to restore Bucky’s memories, the feeling of all his memories coming back empty spots in his mind filling in and clashing with his life working for the Russians is painful for Bucky. He remembers all the peoples he’s killed trying to get the cube and the missions before that. With his moral compass returned it is a crushing blow to him and he grabs the cube from Steve and destroys it.
He disappears in the blast and most people other than Steve presume that he died in it.
He didn’t.
With his new memories he returns to where his life with Steve started trying to sort things out. He is mildly injured from the blast and has no medical treatment.
Bucky goes on the lamb running from his past, and having to face Steve, also trying to piece together what happened to him. During this time Red Skull’s daughter Sister Sin is having her memories returned by her lover Crossbones. They are planing to go after anyone left alive that Bucky knew before the Red Room got to him, because while under Lukin's The Winter Soldier assassinated The Red Skull.
Steve catches on to the fact that Bucky is chasing them down, and this proves to him that Bucky is alive, it also helps SHIELD the means to find Bucky. Once Sister Sin and Crossbones are taken care of, Bucky calls himself into Fury saying he is Willing to come in, as long as Fury sets him up with a new arm.
This gets him working with Steve again and for a short time things are okay, then the events of Civil War happen and it ends with Steve dying and passing the mantle of Captain America to Bucky. Bucky is under great pain after the loss of his best friend, but works through because the world doesn’t deserve men like Steve Rogers, they deserve the coldness only winter can bring, only he can bring.
Soon though it is revealed that Steve survived the shot, and once again they are working together again, until someone leaks to the media who Bucky really is, that he is The Winter Soldier. He goes on trial for war crimes, and because of the brain washing, because of the evidence giving by SHIELD and The Black Widow about what the Red Room did, he is found innocent on all counts. But someone doesn’t agree with that, and he is killed, or so Steve believes.
He is whisked away by Natasha and Fury, and given the infinity formula to save his life, but this slows his already decreased ageing process even more, at the same time it heals his wounds. It traps him in a life with SHIELD and as The Winter Soldier because Fury realizes the tool his has in Barnes, now that people believe he is dead. The only people to know he’s alive are Natasha, Fury, and Bucky and Nat’s handler Agent Sitwell.
Steve and the other Avengers are left to bury a coffin that they don’t know is empty.
Shortly before the events of Winter Soldier # 1 Steve finds out the lie that Fury told him about Bucky’s death, he proceeds to beat the crap out of Fury. Bucky lets him for a while before pulling him off of the Col.
Bucky and Steve talk for awhile and Steve realizes how important it is for him not to tell the others Bucky is alive. Bucky knows there is more good he can do if he remains a secret, more he can do to protect the world from the shadows.
Personality:
Bucky is a honest and good man for the most part, he is unafraid to do what needs to be done and will do what is right when it comes down to it. Before his time with the Russian’s he was a trusting man and put faith into the people he knew. After the return of his memories, he is far less trusting of the people in his life. The only ones he can say he honestly trusts with all parts of him self are Natasha and Steve and he can’t even have Steve as a part of his life right now.
If a person is on Bucky’s good side they have a friend for life and protection, he can be over protective of certain people sometimes to the extreme. But that is because he has suffered so much loss in his life. His parents, then his memories and in some ways his own life, now he has a connection that that moment when he was happy, but can’t reach it and it hurts him.
Given what he has gone through in his childhood and in his adult life, Bucky values the few people he knows he can trust. He makes him over protective of them at times, he doesn’t let this get in the way of missions, but he will make sure that no one gets left behind, that the people who are dear to him Natasha and Steve are safe and sound.
Though he is a high school drop out he values intelligence but doesn’t think that going to school is the only way to obtain that. But that doesn’t mean he thinks dropping out was the best choice and it’s not one he would advise anyone to copy. But he knows four walls and a degree don’t equal a good life.
Bucky at times has nightmares; he’s come to accept them and they leave him cold and shivering in the night. He isn’t ashamed of them but he doesn’t talk about them either. He is a closed book to most people and while it may make him seem cold and calculating on the outside he is actually a quiet caring individual. But after getting his memories back, and combining that with what he now knows he did while under mind control there are a lot of things in life he doesn’t feel he deserves. Love, Friendship, companionship, but he knows that not true, and he one current connection Natasha spends time trying to convince him of that.
Bucky when he gets the chance also loves fun and sometimes he’ll find himself forgetting his current situation and finding a little bit of the old him when he goes out for a drink or to a picture ( The prices today still make his scowl and sometimes he wonders if Steve is suffering from sticker shock as well.) and finds self feeling almost normal. Until he catches a clerk staring at his arm, or the some what visible scars creeping out the left side of his collar and he will be pulled back into his current reality and go back to his apartment and try to remind himself he is fighting for the good now or the lesser of two evils.
Because of all the time he spent brainwashed and outside of his own control, Bucky has some control issues, he likes to know that he has made to the choices to do things. That it is him making the choices going on in his life and not some group of scientists playing with his brain.
He finds himself at odds with orders at times and doesn’t always obey them, because he knows his superiors aren’t always right. When it comes to the order to avoid Steve, it is both a source of relief and great pain. Because he misses the man and wants his best friend, his family back in his life, but at the same time talking to Steve means facing all the horrible things he has done.
Bucky also knows he has a problem at times with being overly honest and far too blunt and at times way too sarcastic it’s a problem he’s had his whole life. It’s a problem that has got him into bar brawls before the war, and back ally fights. He probably peeled more potatoes than any other recruit when he was in boot camp, but still managed to become one of the top snipers in his group.
Overall Bucky is a sharp man filled with pain from his past. A man trying to push past all that he has done, to build himself a future. A man who has drifted through time unaware of some of his actions, and is now back in control.
Fears: Being out of control of a situation in a way that puts others in danger. Bucky is also afraid of people playing with his mind the way those in The Red Room did, his greatest fear is turning back into the monster he was when working for the Russians.
Weaknesses: It can take a long time for Bucky to learn to trust people, including some of the SHIELD agents he works with, when thrown into random places or situations and can make him feel isolated and that he has to go and take care of things on his own.
Also he can at time rush into things when people he cares about are at risk, people who have earned his trust and friendship. In one issue of Winter Soldier he went as far as to let someone program a mission into his mind without letting the others in on the plan. This combination of hard earned trust and the need to protect the people in his inner circle puts him in more danger then he needs to be in.
Mundane Strengths/Abilities:
He is an Olympic-class athlete and exceptional acrobat highly skilled in both unarmed and armed combat as well as hand-to-hand combat and extremely accurate marksman. He is fluent in four languages including German and Russian.
Sensitivity/Magical Ability:
His bionic arm gives his some degree of super strength. He doesn’t have any super powers other than slightly enhanced healing and extremely decreased ageing from the tests and treatments performed on him by The Red Room, as well as the formula Fury gave him. His metal arm is able to deliver electric shocks to those who he punches with it. ( He has control over this feature and it doesn’t give shocks all the time. )
Supply List:
Uniform, two handguns ( two clips each) , his sniper rifle ( 20 rounds ), basic mission kit (small flashlight, small first aide kit three protein bars) . His small Corgi sized dragon named patches. (a game transfer from citadel.)
Game Transfers: His friendship that he built up with Phil in Citadel, the bond that grew between them as agents and friends, trapped in an unknown world. They built a strong friendship between them, and a trust that was just more the what you would get from working at the same covert government agency.
Bucky had a small knowledge of Phil, from hearing stories about him from other agents, but never met the man until The Citadel, and the clicked fairly quickly after helping each other deal with nightmares and wraiths.
Also his small corgi sized dragon named patches that he received in Citadel, Patches is friends with Phil’s dragon Yumi. When Patches is over excited, he tends to have asthmatic like symptoms and was runt of his hatch.
Sample RP post:
He remembers jumping with Nat from the plane to get into the base, he remembers everything sliding and going black, and fuzzy, but he pulled his chute, it was supposed to be an easy op, but aren’t they all, just supposed to be an in and out. But they never go that way, something weird or terrible or some mix of the two always seems to happen to him.
But one minute he is on a mission with Natasha and the next he is in some sort of ancient parlor, like out of some Boris Karloff movie he and Steve saw as kids at The Empire. He shakes the thought from his mind as he looks around the parlor. Why does this shit always happen to him.
He moves around the room carefully looking at the objects and for exits, he pauses and checks himself: his rifle 20 rounds, his side arms with 2 extra clips, and his hip pack with mission supplies. He’d be good for a few days,
He spots a door that looks like it leads to the outside, and moves to it, if he could get communications set back up with the team on the hellacarrier, he might be able to get out of here sooner than later.
Bucky tries to open the door pulling on it, then pulling on it harder, and then trying to knock it down with his shoulder.
“Fuck...” He curses low and angry under his breath, moving around the study again, until he comes to another door. He takes a deep breath, drawing one of his side arms as he opens it slowly, checking with quick trained movements to make sure the area was clear.
Well he could either stumble around here by himself or figure out if anyone was here, both are risks, and he weighs them for a moment. He had jumped out of the plane with Nat, maybe she showed up in this freak show in another room, or maybe he was on his own. He decides calling out and figuring out where the fuck he is is worth the risk, and better than stumbling around on his own.
“Is anyone else here? Show yourselves, slowly.” He calls out into the room, letting the door to the study close behind him.
